05:40 pm - A nudge too far...
Alright, since [info]helenangel went to all the bother of nudging me I guess I'll update... but I won't like it! *G*

Actual update cleverly hidden behind the cut )

08:57 am - Not Dead!
It's Okay, people. I'm not dead! There was no tragic s'mores-making accident (although, for the record, that is how I'd like to go). I also can't claim to have been particularly busy... I've just been neglecting my LJ duties. Sorry about that!

...did I miss anything?

04:15 pm - Goodbye, old friend....
My dearest TiVo died a few days ago... it had been with me for many years, and it was just its time. Still, I'm taking a moment to mourn my old friend - you served me well, series 1 TiVo. May you rest in peace.

Okay. Moment's over. Technology must progress. Anyone out there running a MythTV setup?

02:02 am - One step forward, two books back...
Just finished reading Schrödinger's Rabbits. Not a bad book. Some of the analogies were a little weak, but overall very good. Worth reading for chapter 13 alone. So check that one off my reading list...

...however, two books I ordered about game theory arrived today. So my reading list has actually increased!! It's like a greek tragedy.

01:02 am - O-M-G!
So as I've gotten older my nostrils have gotten a bit on the hairy side. Yeah - sad... but true. Now every so often I get a sore 'bump' in my nose, which feels a bit like a pimple - but I've always assumed they were ingrown hairs. Last week I got one and tried to fix it by plucking the nose hairs in the vicinity, hoping to get the offender (and, btw, OW!!). No luck. After a while it started to 'rise' towards the outside of my nose. At this point, I figured it was a pimple which just started so deep it felt like it was inside my nose. This seemed to be confirmed when it finally emerged on my nose and even got a little head.

By today it wasn't too sore and looked to be getting better. Tonight I started poking at it, thinking it might need a little pop. So I apply a little pressure and out pops a freaking hair!!! Long - a little less than 1/2 inch, sticking straight up, and looking like it had grown on the outside of my nose. Holy crap! At first I thought it was going to be a nightmare - but with very little effort it came completely out. Apparently it had been an ingrown hair all along, and it actually burrowed through my freaking nostril!

Strangest thing that has happened to me since that weird mutant half-tooth grew (and fell out) in roof of my mouth a few years back. Very much freaky.

04:11 pm - The 'J' word...
So I've decided to finally throw in the hat and give up on all this independent consultant nonsense. The money just isn't predictable (or significant)... To be fair, it probably would be, but my super-amazing-god-like-powers-of-geekitude only extend to that which is tech based - so the sales, marketing, and social networking aspects are sort of like my geek kryptonite. To put it another way, quantum physics may be easy - but business theory has made me its bitch.

Working for myself has always been my dream - and I could probably limp along this way forever, but recently I've been focused on a bigger dream - my super-geeky science & tech workshop. And all that equipment costs lots of dough! Plus, in all honesty, while I missed the freedom, I was probably happier at my last job. It was a chaotic position at a small company with new tech problems being thrown at me every day - and I absolutely loved it. If they hadn't gone bankrupt, I'd most likely still be there.

You know there's a problem and a plea for help coming, right? )

10:19 am - HAH! I'm not the only one!
So a tiny handful of those on my friends list may remember me rambling on about my long held theory that, statistically, everyone is immortal (from their own perspective) given either one or more infinite dimensions (time or space) or an infinite multiverse.... well, I've been reading Schrödinger's Rabbits and there is a whole chapter dedicated to this general premise!

This has happened once or twice before - where I'll have my own, independently conceived idea only to later find out that it is a legitimate scientific theory. I really do love when it happens! It makes me feel like I'm not completely off base. It's sort of like having a bunch of REAL scientists agree with your theory (even if it does make it not officially 'your' theory). It also makes me more hopeful that some of my truly unique (as far as I know) ideas might be reasonable. Or, perhaps, large segments of the scientific community are completely nutty!

12:55 am - I don't see that button on my calculator
Why do I love reading about quantum mechanics so much? Because amongst the tedium and convoluted analogies you find quotes like this:

The worlds we could expect to see include not just unlikely versions of our own universe but surreal possibilities like half the square root of minus one times a dead cat plus a live cat.
(from Schrödinger's Rabbits)

05:28 pm - Sofie's Cat
Just listened to the podcast over at Woot.com... they are always funny, but this literally made me laugh until it hurt. (Might be more appealing to those who know a little about Quantum mechanics)...

02:06 pm - Just call me Geeky McGeeksalot
Slightly old, but not yet posted, news... Earlier this week I finally squashed the bug in my Flash visual effect code that has been pwning my ass for almost a month. Turns out the fucker was hiding out in some math support class I had written - and not anywhere near the visual effect itself.

Also - I think I'm going to have to read a book on special relativity. I thought I had it pretty down... but last night, while reading a book on quantum entanglement, I found myself struggling to comprehend one of the examples. I think either I never grasped it as fully as I imagined, or that grasp has weakened over the years.

And, also, I'm hungry.

04:30 am - This just in...
I honestly just had a dream that had "Batman and Tapir" selling knockoff marshmallow peeps from a roadside stand in an underground effort to stop an evil villain from enslaving the human race.

...that is all (back to bed!)

08:05 am - OMG, Healthy!
Last night (or was it this morning?) I went to Walgreens to pick up a couple things. While I was there I got a blood pressure monitor, cholesterol test, and anemia test... all things I've been meaning to test for a little while (I've been feeling a bit lethargic, sometimes get migraines, and a few other anecdotal symptoms of heart/blood/circulation problems). It turns out that, aside from my apparent case of hypochondria, I'm completely healthy! This should come as a complete shock to anyone who has seen me eat a whole bag of cookies for dinner, or a half dozen donuts for breakfast... (yesterday it was Apple Pie for breakfast AND dinner). No guarantees as to how long I'll fit in these pants, though! =)

For the record, however, I hate poking myself (at least with a needle)!

On an unrelated note, I've got my hardware design & simulation software all set up! Still need to get some working experience with the VHDL language (which is totally unlike any software programming language). After a few 'test' projects I'll be looking for a respectable hardware project that I can load on some programmable hardware (FPGA, most likely). I'm totally excited in the way that only a complete nerd could be!

07:55 am - Better now...
Walked the puppies around the block, and am now 'obtaining' *cough* MultiSim SE 6.1 (not sure if it is for Windows or Linux, though), so I guess it is back to reading, while I wait!

And - OHMYGOD - one of the dogs (now chillin' in the back bathroom) has gas and is stinking up the WHOLE FREAKING HOUSE.... *gag*

07:05 am - Pacing a hole in my brain
It has just occurred to me that I am BORED OUT OF MY SKULL!

I've been reading a lot for the past week or so (currently alternating between The Meme Machine and VHDL Starters Guide) and I think I just hit my limit of 'sitting around passively learning' for the day. I'm itching for something interactive so bad my leg is twitching.

Alas, there isn't anything I can think of to do right now. I'd love to be playing around with some VHDL, but without a simulator or programmable hardware to see the results, that is pretty pointless. Alternatively, I could be writing my Woot-O-Matic app - but I have decided to do it in C++ (since I haven't used C++ in nearly 10 years, and even then not much) but am going to need a little (read: "ass load") of refresher - and my C++ book hasn't arrived yet (not that I'd want to read it right now anyway).

...maybe I should just walk the dogs before it gets too hot outside.

05:35 am - Grrr... Argh!
For the record, in case anyone cares, I really do read LJ daily. For some reason I've just not been much of a poster lately... I'd like to say I've been busy - but we all know that would be a lie.

So my hard drive failed and ate all my MP3s... or at least, it threatened to. I managed to reach down its throat and salvage the vast majority of them. Trying to make sure all the important stuff survived, and flogging myself for not having a backup.... although the way I do it, it isn't much of a discouragement.

Also, been re-watching all of the Buffys with Ang and [info]silverjazz (although [info]kothoga is apparently too cool for the Buff-ster). It's been a while, so it is nice to renew my BtVS fanboy license.

Been doing a good bit of reading the last couple of weeks, too. So far I've read three books - On Intelligence, The Code Book, and Intelligent Thought... all of which were good - especially the first two. I'm trying to work my way through a fourth - Practical FPGA Programming in C, but like most hardware/software development books, it is a little dry. A few new books have been ordered and should be here soon... Phantoms in the Brain, The Meme Machine, Parallel Worlds, Schrodinger's Rabbits, and Quantum Entanglement...

...maybe I should start reviewing these as I read them. Then again, I was never much on book reports. Anyone have any non-fiction reading they can recommend?
